My VW Bora 1.9TDI does a whining noise when turning ast slow speeds. Any idea what is could be?

the noise is a lot more noticeable when turning LEFT. By the sound of it pretty sure it is the power steering related, but why is it worse when turning left? please let me know qhat the possible causes might be and whether i should get it checked out? THANKS GUYS!!!
