Are there rambo-like roles in the military?

I know we have special forces but is there some factual basis for a Rambo like character (1 man on a covert mission - knifing people, planting bombs, and then disappearing without a trace). From what I've read our Special Forces seem to concentrate on getting in close and calling down bombs from our bombers, but I was wondering if we've ever had the need for the abovementioned.
