Are extreme atheists as bad as extremely religious people?

I ask because I find myself getting worked up when people talk about religion as if it was a fact, rather than a set of opinions, and I want to shout and correct them just as an extremist religious nut might. This is disturbing. Should we aim to eradicate religious belief in society, or should we be tolerant of outdated religious thinking? Atheists, what are your ideas?
